Tom Lubbe, the colourful New Zealander, moved to South Africa at a young age, where he developed his love of southern winemaking. Today he is the owner and winemaker of Domaine Matassa in the Roussillon region of southern France, where he has been making wine since 2003.
Tom owns about 14 hectares of vineyards, mainly with traditional Catalan grapes such as Carignan, Macabeu, Grenache, Grenache Gris, Muscat d'Alexandrie and Muscat de Petits-Grains.
Domaine Matassa has achieved great success and has become a model winery for many young natural winemakers who seek to make wines in a cooler style with more tension in the flavour. The wines have great ageing potential and offer a lot of drinking pleasure.
Tom makes the wines the way he wants them - the whites are serious, with sharp skin contact despite their great freshness, and the reds are featherlight and easy to drink.
